Zine is a launcher and music player for Android. This policy explains what information Zine uses and where it goes.
What we collect
The Zine app doesn't collect any personal information. It has no accounts, analytics, ads or tracking.
On your phone
Zine saves your settings, layout, playback history, podcast and radio subscriptions, downloads, wallpaper images and fonts inside the app. Uninstalling Zine deletes them.
Zine doesn't use Android's cloud backup. When you back up your layout in Settings, the file is saved to Download/Zine on your phone. Server logins are not included.
Music servers
If you add a music server, such as Navidrome, Jellyfin, Ampache or Audiobookshelf, Zine stores the address and login on your phone and sends them only to that server.
Other connections
- Podcasts, radio stations and RSS feeds you add are loaded from their own websites.
- The weather widget looks up the place you type with OpenStreetMap and gets the forecast from MET Norway. It doesn't use your phone's location.
- Podcast search uses Apple's iTunes Search. Radio search uses Radio Browser.
- While a radio station plays, Zine looks up cover art for the current song on iTunes Search.
- When you share a link to Zine, it gets the title and picture from that site, such as YouTube or Spotify. When you share text, Zine searches DuckDuckGo images for a picture.
Each of these services has its own privacy policy.
Notification access
This is optional. With it, Zine can see the song, artist and cover art playing in your other music and podcast apps. Zine uses that to show playback controls and match its colors. Zine doesn't read your notifications or send this information anywhere. You can turn access off in Android settings.
Permissions
- Music and audio: to play the music on your phone.
- Microphone: Android requires this permission for the visualizer, which reads the music Zine is playing. Zine doesn't turn on the microphone, listen to you or record anything. You can say no.
- Notifications: to show playback controls.
- Installed apps: to show and open your apps.
- Uninstall apps: to uninstall an app from Zine. Android asks you first.
- Widgets: to add other apps' widgets. Android asks you first.
- Wallpaper: to set your wallpaper.
- Wi-Fi and network: to stream music and find servers on your home network.
Crash reports and feedback
If Zine crashes, it can open a crash report in your email app. Nothing is sent unless you send the email. The report includes your phone model, Android version, Zine version and recent app logs. We use it to fix bugs.
Send feedback and Report a bug in Settings open your email app with your Zine version, phone model and Android version filled in. Nothing is sent unless you send the email. We keep these emails to reply and to fix problems.
Zine Plus and tips
Zine Plus and tips are optional and handled by Google Play. We never see your payment details. Zine asks Google Play whether your account owns Zine Plus and remembers the answer on your phone. Tips don't unlock anything.
Beta signup
If you sign up for the beta on this website, we store your email address, when you signed up and the consent wording you agreed to. We use them to send you the steps to join the beta, news about Zine and, at launch, a Zine Plus code for testers. We don't sell or share them.
They are stored on our own server. The emails are sent through Resend, an email delivery service, which receives your email address to deliver them.
Deleting your data
Everything Zine keeps on your phone is deleted when you uninstall it. To have your beta signup, or any crash report or feedback email you sent us, deleted, email hello@nokose.co from that address and ask. We delete them within 30 days and keep nothing after.
Children
Zine isn't made for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll post it here and update the date at the top.
